Vim Kōans

@share (, ~147 words)

These parody kōans, were my introduction to Zen philosophy through the usual long walk of Wikipedia pages. Even though they are written as humorous facsimiles of real Buddhist texts, they propose good ideas about the nature of Vim.

There's one kōan I can't stop thinking about: Mastery of Vimscript

A student enquired of Master Wq, “When will I know I have mastered Vimscript?”

Master Wq answered, “When you never use it.”

I can't stop thinking about it because of its raw truth. The path of most Vim users is to start small while learning the basics, then discover the plugin system to write an overblown configuration, and finally progressively settle with basic options that were there all along. It has been my experience and that of lots of people I have talk to, at least!
